Church and State join forces to establish teachers college

The diocese of Alotauin cooperation with the provincial and national government, will soon open a teachers’ college.

Both parties signed a Memorandum of Agreement to this effect on 3 April.

Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay Province, in the south-east of Papua New Guinea. It is located on the northern shore of Milne Bay.

The Milne Bay Provincial Government and the Catholic Diocese of Alotau will be joint owners of the teachers college.

It will operate as a Catholic Agency Institution.

The Church will be responsible for the management, administration and upkeep of the facilities.

The provincial and national government will meet most of the construction costs estimated at about PGK 25 million.

The European Union cooperation and development office in Port Moresby has also shown interest in the venture.

The teachers college will be located on Church land at Hagita, about 15 km East of Alotau,

There are already a primary and secondary school run by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart at Hagita.

According to local Bishop Rolando Santos the teachers’ college. will be able to accept the first intakes as early as January 2016.

“Let us pray for the success of this very important partnership,” Bishop Santos said after the signing of the agreement.

“It can bring much benefit to the development of the province as well as the evangelisation of the young people of Milne Bay “.

A typhoon that was due hit Milne Bay caused the postponement of groundbreaking ceremonies scheduled for the 11 of April.
