Ethics education needed in schools

Young people need to study ethics and values in school to help them navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse society says Catherine Syms.

She is undertaking doctoral research through the Institute of Education to gauge the diverse views of intermediate-age students in a multicultural state school.

She’ll then use her findings as the basis for a pilot programme to engage young people in discussions on a broad range of world-views and philosophies.

Syms taught religion, philosophy and ethics at secondary schools in Britain as well as at Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland.

Four years ago she set up New Zealand’s first school-based Centre for Ethics while teaching at Diocesan School.
