Vatican slaps Brittany Maynard’s family in the face

Brittany Maynard’s mother is calling the Vatican’s response to the 29 year old’s decision to terminate her life “more than a slap in the face”.

In a sharply written response to the Vatican, Debbie Ziegler said the comments came at the wrong time; while the family was grieving.

Monsignor Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, head of the Pontifical Academy for Life, responded to the sensational media coverage saying her choice was “reprehensible”, that there is no dignity in dying this way and that physician-assisted suicide should be condemned.

“Killing yourself is not a good thing; it’s a bad thing because it says no to life and to all that means in relation to our duty in the world and to those close to us,” said de Paula.

Maynard suffered from terminal brain cancer and in the spring was given six months to live.

She moved to Oregon from Northern California with her husband and parents because Oregon allows terminally ill patients to die using lethal medications prescribed by a doctor.

Maynard used her story to speak out for the right of the terminally ill to end their lives on their own terms. A media campaign by her and Compassion & Choices sparked a national conversation.

In a final Facebook posting, Ms Maynard wrote: “Goodbye world. Spread good energy. Pay it forward!”
