One Response to MPs deny parents’ the right to be informed of 15 year-old daughter’s abortion

Thank you for your interesting newsletter. The item on parental notification states that there are on average 60 abortions each year in New Zealand and that only about 10 girls do not advise their parents. Presumably this information came from the Abortion Supervisory Committee. The information is incorrect, information obtained from Statistics NZ reveal that in 2013 there were 163 abortions on girls under the age of 16 and in 2014, 150. It is pure speculation that there were only 10 girls who did not advise their parents. The information that is captured by the ASC is recorded on form ASC 4 and there is no requirement for certifying consultants to provide this information. I hope that this information is helpful.
