Bishop rejects cathedral compromise... Read more]]> Bishop Victoria Matthews has rejected an offer of peace talks over the Christ Church Cathedral rebuild, accusing the nation's heritage watchdog of trying to "publicly pressure" the church into a partial retention.

Despite the response, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT) says it remains hopeful of an "open dialogue" over the landmark's future.

The NZHPT this month formalised its offer to act as an intermediary between the Church Property Trustees and those seeking restoration of the cathedral, to explore whether a compromise solution was possible. Continue reading

Cathedral debate canned... Read more]]> The planned televised Cathedral Debate about the fate of the Christ Church Cathedral has been cancelled after the Anglican Church refused to take part.

Earlier this month, the church announced that most of the cathedral would be demolished after it suffered further damage in the December 23 aftershocks.

The decision has upset many residents and heritage advocates, while Cr Aaron Keown called for a televised debate about the cathedral's future.
