Pope Francis sent a practical message to G20 members who met in Hamburg, Germany on 7 and 8 July.

He addressed the message to the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, who had invited him to do so.

In his message, Francis explains four principles of action for building fraternal, just and peaceful societies. In brief these are:

  • Time is greater than space: consider effective solutions for the immigration crisis that has hit Europe and the Middle East in the past several years.
  • Unity prevails over conflict: war…is never a solution ... There is a tragic contradiction and inconsistency in the apparent unity expressed in common forums on economic or social issues, and the acceptance, active or passive, of armed conflicts.
  • Realities are more important than ideas: do not to fall into the ideologies of the first half of the 20th century that brought "exclusion, waste and even death."
  • The whole is greater than the part: problems need to be resolved concretely and with due attention to their specificity, but such solutions, to be lasting, cannot neglect a broader vision.

Francis says these four principles are part of the age-old wisdom of all humanity. "I believe that they can also serve as an aid to reflection for the Hamburg meeting and for the assessment of its outcome," he said.

His message emphasises the need for multilateral solutions to the problems facing humanity today.

"The gravity, complexity and interconnection of world problems is such that there can be no immediate and completely satisfying solutions." He pointed to "the migration crisis, which is inseparable from the issue of poverty and exacerbated by armed conflicts" as proof of this."

While there are no immediate adequate solutions to these problems, Francis encouraged the G20 leaders to be hopeful.

"It is possible ... to set in motion processes that can offer solutions that are progressive and not traumatic, and which can lead in relatively short order to free circulation and to a settlement of persons that would be to the advantage of all."

The Archbishop of Westminster has attacked politicians' "shameful" response to conflict in Syria as thousands of Christians around the country gathered this weekend to pray for peace.

Speaking on BBC Radio Four's Sunday programme Archbishop Vincent Nichols criticised the leaders of the G20 group of nations for failing to reach an accord when they met in Russia last week.

"That these summits have taken place and leaders stop and watch firework displays and fancy dress parties is shameful," he said, in a reference to events at last week's G20 summit.

He spoke out against military intervention and called the notion of limited military action "a nonsense", adding that politicians campaigning for a military response had not given a clear reason why.

"There are 4 million displaced people within Syria, that's half of London, and there are 2 million refugees, that's the whole of the north-west conurbations, everybody from Liverpool and Manchester and the suburbs. This is the issue. This war has to be brought to a halt," he said. Continue reading

Pope Francis has written to Vladimir Putin criticising world leaders for standing by while a "senseless massacre" unfolded in Syria.

In a letter sent on Sept 4 to Mr Putin in his role of host of the G20 conference, and published on Thursday, Francis wrote: "It is regrettable that, from the very beginning of the conflict in Syria, one-sided interests have prevailed and in fact hindered the search for a solution that would have avoided the senseless massacre now unfolding."

Through Mr Putin, Francis appealed to the G20 leaders gathering in Russia: "The leaders of the G20 cannot remain indifferent to the dramatic situation of the beloved Syrian people which has lasted far too long, and even risks bringing greater suffering to a region bitterly tested by strife and needful of peace.

"To the leaders present, to each and every one, I make a heartfelt appeal for them to help find ways to overcome the conflicting positions and to lay aside the futile pursuit of a military solution." Continue reading

The Caritas-CIDSE G20 Network of Catholic agencies says making sure all people have access to appropriate food must be the priority for the leaders of G20 economies as they meet 18-19 June in Mexico.

There are 925 million people in the world without enough to eat. About 300 children die from malnutrition every hour while one in four children is stunted, and in developing countries that figure rises to one in three. Yet we produce more than enough food globally to feed everyone.

The Caritas-CIDSE G20 Network says reducing inequality and promoting sustainable development must be at the heart of the G20s plans to address food insecurity in the short, medium and long term.

Caritas Internationalis Secretary General Michel Roy said, "Hunger is not inevitable. It must be tackled by fighting its structural causes, primarily by promoting sustainable agriccultural development of poor countries". Continue reading
