The priest has been removed from duties after being charged with indecent assault.

The vicar-general of the Archdiocese of Wellington, Monsignor Gerry Burns told parishioners at mass last Sunday that police had charged the priest who had been at St Mary's Parish since last year, with indecent assault following a complaint.

"As a result he has been removed from ministry. As this case is due before the courts, no further details will be discussed."

A police spokeswoman confirmed a 71-year-old Blenheim man would appear in court on Tuesday for his first appearance on one charge of indecent assault on a male aged over 16 years of age.

Ireland priest cleared of indecent assault... Read more]]> Fr Dan Duane, of Cecilstown in Mallow, Co Cork, had told the jury at Cork Circuit Criminal Court that he had no recollection of the meeting where the woman alleged he had assaulted her.

The alleged victim had claimed that this meeting had changed the course of her life. She claimed Fr Duane had indecently assaulted her while whispering to her that it was "OK with God" and "God would approve."

Fr Duane denied the assault and said he had no recollection of the meeting the woman complained of.

He told the court she must have invented the story.

The jury delivered its not guilty verdict after an hour and 25 minutes of deliberations.
