The Presbyterian Church's Maori division has rounded on its General Assembly, accusing it of walking away from its partnership to fund and support Turakina Maori Girls' College.

The chair of Te Aka Puaho - the Maori Synod, Reverend Wayne Te Kaawa, said the General Assembly and Central Presbytery has left the Synod struggling alone to support their Maori school.

"The Pakeha side of the church sort of became quiet... silent, non-involved and we were basically left holding the can, and so we've done the best we can knowing that in the Maori part of the church we simply do not have the funds." Continue reading

35 Hato Paora College students, aged 15 to 18, are going to Los Angeles next week for a cultural and faith exchange.

They are going to San Juan Capistrano where they will meet the Juaneno Band of Mission Indians, belonging to the Acjachemen Nation.

Hato Paora head boy Campbell Te Paa, says "Getting to know another culture will be really interesting."

School principal Debra Marshall-Lobb said the Marist school, with just under 100 pupils, was the only Catholic-Maori boys school in the world. The objective of the trip was to help the boys discover their place in the global community, she said.

"As Maori, we are an indigenous people and having the opportunity to connect with other indigenous communities is an opportunity too good to miss."
