Marist Brothers High School (MBHS) believes the unique and different cultures of their school must be showcased at this year's Kula Dance Festival.

The school's Kula Dance Co-ordinator and teacher Mafai Rudolph Mausio said they would enact this by including hip-hop, contemporary, Bollywood, Island and iTaukei dance styles.

Mausio said the different styles are being combined in one fusion dance to showcase a unity of cultures.

He said 30 students are part of their group and they were eager to show the public the importance of accepting other cultures.

"The dance is focused on the students from different cultures in the school trying to mix together with different talents and put up a dance within a time frame of 10 minutes," Mr Mausio said.

"We have been taking part every year and we won in 2008 and 2009 and we are planning to make it happen again this year."

The Kula Film Festival and the Artwork competition will be held at Damodar City on July 27 and the Kula Dance Festival will be held on July 28 at the FMF Gymnasium.

Since the inception of the awards in 2006, the number of schools participating has increased exponentially.

This year a record number of 41 schools will be taking part.

34 schools have registered for the Film competition, 20 in the dance competition and 34 schools in the art competition.

The Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Land and Mineral Resources, Hon. Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, while launching the Kula Awards 2018 said the event helps young people to understand the world around them.

He said the Kula Awards, which is a major development programme for Film Fiji for the last 13 years, provides a great avenue for students to develop and express their creativity.

Last week schools that are part of the Marist Brothers family marked the bicentennial of the founding of Marist Brothers and the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Marist Brothers High School.

On Friday, the archbishop of Suva, Peter Loy Chong was accorded a traditional welcoming ceremony in front of a crowd of over 800 guests of former scholars, parents, and students at Marist Brothers High School.

In his speech Chong spoke about the importance of education and how Catholic schools had played a pivotal role in Fiji

"The Catholic brothers and the whole Catholic education has been at this work for almost 130 years and we want to thank them as pioneers of the education," he said.

The Marist Brothers helped establish an education system in Fiji. They established Marist Brothers Primary, St Marcellin Primary School, St. John's College Cawaci, Marist Brothers High School, St Bedes College, and Napuka Secondary School.

Chong said that one of the many challenges faced at Catholic schools in Fiji is the reduced number of Marist Brothers serving at the schools.

Brother Terrence Costello was also the bicentennial celebrations and while he is in Fiji he will be setting up up a governing board as part of a plan to address the challenges ahead, including the diminishing number of Brothers who are available to serve in Catholic schools.

"My main focus is to get this governing board established so that our schools can get clear direction of its history and traditions," he said.

On Sunday the celebration concluded with a march from Marist Brothers Primary School at Suva Street to Marist Brothers High School at Flagstaff.

Last Tuesday Marist Brothers High School, the first multi-racial school in Fiji, marked its 75th anniversary celebration with a march from Marist Suva Street to Flagstaff.

Old boys from the US, Australia and New Zealand also gathered in numbers to mark one of the auspicious occasions for the school, with old scholars sharing their experience at the school with students.

Former pupil Doctor Sohan Singh said being part of the celebration brought back joyous memories for him.

Dr Singh was in MBHS from 1964 to 1967 and has lived in the US for several years.

Last week old boys of Marist Brothers High School who were members of Alphonsus house organised a charity golf tournament at the Fiji Golf Club (FGC) course in Vatuwaqa.

About 90 golfers took part in the day-long event to contribute towards the Marist Old Boys (MOB) trust fund.

Tournament organiser Billy Singh was overwhelmed with the turnout and support from the ex-MBHS scholars along with the FGC members.

While Marist Brothers' High School is celebrating its 75th anniversary, another Marist Brothers institute, Marist Champagnat Institute (MCI), is in the words of founder Brother Fergus Garret, marking its "half silver jubilee".
The Principal of this vocational institute, Francis Varea, explained that they are not an achievement-based school. Success is instead based on their students' progress. Not according to any orthodox standards.

A 66-member all boy choir has recorded an album made up of 18 spiritual songs, which they sing at church.

Called Nanuma Lesu - Recall, the musical venture by boarders of Marist Brothers High School's Ratu Mara Hostel is sponsored by their parents.

Yesterday, their publicist Theresa Chan said among the 18 songs was a tribute to Fiji's prime minister and late statesman, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, whom the hostel was named after.

The song, Ciri Koto, was written by Ratu Mara, himself a former student, while the music was composed by Sir Josua Rabukawaqa.

"The words are a deep reflection of the great loss and admiration Ratu Mara, a recognised world leader, chief and statesman had for Fiji," Ms Chan said.
