An Israeli appeals court has asked Catholic bishops to join proceedings to help them decide a divorce case involving a Maronite couple.

The court overturned a lower court ruling that awarded compensation to the husband because his wife refused to change her religion so he could divorce her.

Maronites, founded in Syria, form the only Eastern church which has always been in communion with Rome.

Life has become so dangerous for Christians in Syria that they face the choice of trying to leave — in itself a difficult course of action — or being killed.

That's the view of the Maronite archbishop of Damascus, Archbishop Samir Nassar, who says defenceless civilians, both Christians and Muslims, are being killed each day by bombs, car bombs, snipers and lack of medical care.

The local Church has become a "wall of tears", to which all are turning "for protection and help in finding a visa to leave".

The leader of the Maronite Catholic Church has announced plans for a meeting of all Orthodox and Catholic patriarchs of the Middle East.

Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai, one of the four leaders of Eastern Catholic Churches who will be taking part in the conclave to elect the new pope, said the aim would be "to promote unity among Christians and deal with the problems and suffering that we share in this difficult moment in history".

He said the patriarchs will form an important network of ecumenical leaders, as a support system for the embattled Christians of the region.
