Facebook's policy bans "titles of any kind" - including doctor, professor or president - from being included in one's name on a personal page.

The banning of prominent Washington priest Msgr Charles Pope, a national columnist, sparked debate.

Facebook argues that their no titles policy is about safety.

People are required to use their real life names -not necessarily their legal names - so others know with whom they are connecting.

After an outcry, Facebook let members of the LGBTI community use names like "Sister Roma" and "Lil Miss Hot Mess" as these were considered "authentic name[s] they use in real life".

"It is a simple fact that word ‘marriage' as we have traditionally known it is being redefined in our times," said Monsignor Charles Pope of Washington archdiocese.

"To many in the secular world the word no longer means what it once did and when the Church uses the word marriage we clearly do not mean what the increasing number of states mean."
