Churches, schools, workplaces, sports clubs and homes in North Otago will be visited as part of a new anti-bullying project.

The venture, launched by Fale Pasifika o Aoraki, will target the growing Pacific Island population in the region.

It aims to educate, raise awareness and promote action.

Oamaru-based Beni Latavao is heading the project, and he will work with other organisations, including Youthtown and police.

Fale Pasifika o Aoraki manager Ofa Boyle said bullying did not appear to be a major problem in Oamaru, which has a rapidly growing Tongan population.

But the project would be a good opportunity for more of the Pacific Islands community in the area to connect, she said.

She hoped the project would promote positive parenting and encourage young people to stop, get involved and stand up to bullying.
