Christian, Muslim leaders condemn Nice attack

Religious leaders around the world have condemned terrorism and expressed solidarity with France after the attack in Nice in which scores of people died.

The religious voices included Christian figures such as Pope Francis and prominent Muslims including the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Shawqi Allam.

A truck drove through crowds celebrating Bastille Day (July 14) in Nice.

Pope Francis expressed revulsion over the attack.

"We condemn in the strongest way every demonstration of senseless violence, of hatred, terrorism and any attack against peace," said a statement issued from the Vatican.

"On behalf of Pope Francis, we join in solidarity with the suffering of the victims and of the entire French people this day that should have been a great holiday."

A truck has ploughed into a crowd of Catholic pilgrims in Mexico, killing at least 16 people and injuring 30 others.

Some 200 people were taking part in a procession on the main street of Mazapil in Zacatecas state when the truck ran into them.

The dump truck "was apparently left without brakes and struck the crowd", which was heading to a Catholic church, an official from the state's civil protection agency said.

The truck driver fled the scene after the incident.

The pilgrims had been travelling to the San Gregorio Magno church in Mazapil since last Sunday as part of a celebration for a patron saint.
