It is alway sad to see a church destroyed. The people in Christchurch are mourning the loss of their churches that have been destroyed in the earthquake. No less the people of Apia mourn the loss of their Cathedral, which has been demolished. Most are sad to see it go. Some are angry believing it need not have been demolished at all.
Churches are sacred places. Families have seen their loved ones baptized, married and buried from them. People have spent many hours in them praying, singing or just sitting in the healing silence. The very walls have absorbed the life that has been lived in them.
The century-old Mulivai Catholic Cathedral, which is also the burial site of the Late Cardinal Pio Taofinu’u, has faced much wear and tear over the years. Its deteriorating state has posed a serious risk to the safety of people who use the Cathedral as a house of worship.
