What do Beethoven, Tupac, the Pope and the Dalai Lama have in common? This was the question posed by His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi when he opened the Samoa Conference II at the National University of Samoa (NUS) on 8 July. The Head of State, who is also Chancellor, referred to the four icons as they represent different genres, belief systems and as a group, reflect both “our diversity as humans and our sameness.”
The Conference provided a forum to bring together all international and local academics, as well as practitioners in business, government or non-government organisations who have done, or are currently doing research or any innovative activities on any aspect of development in Samoa. Those making presentations included academics and practitioners from the United States, France, Switzerland, Hawaii, Australia and the Pacific region as well as local leaders from the government, non-government, local business and cultural communities.
