Plans for strengthing St Mary of the Angels ready in November

Central city Church, St Mary of the Angels in Wellington, New Zealand has been closed because it is an earthquake risk.

It is hoped the church will re-open within the next 18 months  amd last week, Parish Priest, Father Barry Scannell announced that the design drawings for the seismic strengthening of the Church are in the final stages of development and should be ready by the end of November.s

When completed these drawings will represent nearly five years of work by engineers, architects and the building consultants L T McGuinness Ltd.

A quantity surveyor will then put the number of dollars required to complete the strengthening work.

Fundraising is already underway and will be a huge challenge. However, like Stanislaus Mahony s.m. who built this magnificent Church during the years 1919 – 1922,

“We have great faith in the generosity of people to preserve this Church for future generations,” Scannell said.
