The Archbishop of Port Moresby, John Ribat, says the selling of buai – betelnut should not be banned.
He says people make a living from buai and it can be controlled.
Loop reports that he said this when he was speaking over the number of deaths related to the smuggling and selling of buai in Port Moresby.
“There are other provinces that are controlling the selling as well as the consumption of buai,” he said.
“It can be controlled here too in Port Moresby.”
Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, recently announced the establishment of selected city markets for the sale and chewing of buai.
He said this was done to help control littering and the spread of disease like tuberculosis.
Post Courier reports Ribat asking why, if the buai ban still continues, are places chosen for selling it and chewing it.
He said the situation needs to be clarified.
