Last week a gathering of Anglicans from the Pacific Region began their Conference in Canberra by announcing the creation of a new Anglican Diocese of the Southern Cross with former Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Glenn Davies as bishop.

This diocese is not part of the Anglican Church in Australia but is linked to the majority of the world's Anglicans through the Primates Council of the GAFCON network.

This network held its first gathering in 2008 in response to the consecration of a same-sex partnered bishop in the USA and the blessing of same-sex unions in Canada.

Evangelicals in Australia hoped that the Anglican Church resist this path, but those hopes were finally dashed at the Anglican Synod earlier this year when the bishops refused to acknowledge the biblical teaching that Christian marriage is a union between a man and a woman.

The realisation that the Anglican Church will continue to embrace the ‘progressive' ethical and moral values of the secular world and shape their understanding of Scripture accordingly has prompted some evangelicals to link themselves to others who share their views.

Divisions in Anglicanism are not new. Ever since the Reformation, there have been differing factions within Anglicanism.

There have been those who have held on to their Catholic sacramental and ecclesiological heritage as best they could, the Calvinist/evangelical faithful for whom the Scriptures are the sole authority in faith, and the broad church faithful who are anti-dogmatic liberals.

The creation of a new Anglican diocese in Australia offers Catholics a glimpse of a future we do not want.

Over the centuries, the evangelicals have been dominant and have frustrated the numerous attempts by the Catholic wing to reunite with Western Catholicism. In more recent times, the broad church or "progressive liberals" have been the main influence in the western Anglican world, while the evangelicals have maintained dominance in Africa, South America and Asia, which account for the majority of Anglicans' live.

The Anglican Church has a flair for maintaining an exterior veneer of unity while being riddled with interior dissent. They call it, "living with differences" which in reality means that the most powerful group suppresses all dissent by declaring that unity is more important than truth.

When the Anglican Church ordained women to the priesthood and episcopacy, some Catholic-minded faithful (including myself) saw this as the trigger to redouble their efforts to reunite with Rome. The deeper reason was that ordaining women was believed to be the first step by the Anglican Church to abandon any credible claim to Catholicity.

The evangelicals had different reasons for not supporting the priestly ordination of women so were content to remain within the Anglican Church at that time. The result of the Catholic-minded Anglican approach to Rome was the invitation by Pope Benedict XVI to erect a new diocese-like structure known as an Ordinariate.

Within this structure, former Anglicans could enter into the fullness of Catholic unity while maintaining the distinctiveness of some of their English Spiritual tradition and expressing that tradition through an approved form of the Roman Rite.

The Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross was erected in Australia in 2012.

Within the past ten years, Catholic-minded Anglicans and evangelical Anglicans have split from the Anglican Church.

The Catholics have come "back home" to Rome.

The evangelicals, who, despite sharing very similar moral and social teaching views to Catholics, are highly unlikely to join the Ordinariate.

The reason for both these splits is the belief that the Anglican Church has abandoned God's truth as revealed in Jesus, Scripture and Tradition.

The history of God's people reveals that whenever they distanced themselves from God, his Law and the teaching of the Church by embracing the culture of the secular, pagan world, they were judged, punished and eventually restored after being reconciled to God. Is this why splits have occurred, and Anglicanism is crumbling?

The exit of Anglican Catholics has resulted in the demise of any serious Catholic thread in Anglicanism, and the erection of the Diocese of the Southern Cross will significantly weaken Australian Anglicanism.

It has taken a while, but the veneer of Anglican unity has been trampled under the foot of truth.

We Catholics need to learn from this sad development because it is clear that within the Catholic Church, including Australia, there are voices whose agenda is to push the Church down the same ‘progressive' road by adopting a diluted doctrine, secular morality and corporate structures that are accelerating the demise of the Western Canterbury Communion.

If we don't learn, the virus of schism will surely infect the Catholic Church.

The Anglican Church in Australia has split, triggered by intractable divisions over same-sex marriage and accusations that bishops are out of touch with grassroots Anglicans.

The Diocese of the Southern Cross was officially launched in Canberra on Sunday, with former Sydney Anglican Archbishop Glenn Davies (pictured) named its first bishop.

"I think you'll see the Diocese of the Southern Cross will have a significant impact," the 71-year-old told the Sydney Morning Herald. He added that many Anglicans felt the Australian church had strayed from the teachings of the Bible.

The Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia, Adelaide Archbishop Geoffrey Smith, labeled the move as "perplexing" in a statement published Thursday.

A meeting of the General Synod held in May this year "clearly affirmed the view that marriage is between a man and a woman, and declined to affirm same-sex marriage," Smith said.

"It is perplexing therefore that the leaders of this breakaway movement cite the reason for this new denomination as the failure of General Synod to explicitly express an opinion against the blessing of same-sex marriages."

But an attempt by the Sydney archdiocese to affirm that marriage is only between a man and a woman was narrowly voted down at a synod in May, prompting warnings of the risk of a schism.

Notably, the statement upholding the traditional view of marriage was passed by the house of the laity by 63 votes to 47 and by the house of clergy by 70 votes to 39. But the bishops exercised their veto power by rejecting the statement by 12 to 10, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Two bishops abstained.

This led to the accusations that bishops were out of touch with grassroots Anglicans.

Conservatives have declared the issue of same-sex marriage a "line in the sand". They are concerned that progressives within the church have put modern social justice considerations above the Bible's "unchanging truth" that marriage is between a man and a woman.

However, progressive Anglicans say they are "devastated" by the split and question whether a breakaway group can still consider itself Anglican.

Peter Stuart, the Bishop of Newcastle, apologised to the LGBTQI community. "I am sorry for the pain that you endure too often when Anglicans speak," he said. North Queensland Bishop Keith Joseph described the split as an "error".

Clarence Bester, the Bishop of Wangaratta, said it was "a sadness that we discriminate against people, and we use scripture as justification".

Dorothy Lee, an Anglican theologian and priest, described it as a sad day for the church. "I think [the decision to launch a breakaway movement] is aggressive, and arrogant and absolutist," she said.

According to the 2016 census, 3.1 million Australians identified as Anglicans, making it the second-largest Christian denomination in that country; the largest is the Roman Catholic Church.

A schism that developed in 2018 over same-sex marriage blessings in the NZ Anglican church is being further inflamed by what is seen as meddling from Sydney's ultra-conservative diocese.

The Sydney diocese, which opposes same-sex marriage blessings, has indicated to the Anglican Church in Aotearoa New Zealand & Polynesia (ACANZP) that organised religion in New Zealand is over.

The schism between the NZ Anglican faithful concerns what Anglican clergy may and may not do in relation to same-sex marriages. Some say the clergy can bless same-sex marriages - while others say Anglican clergy can officiate at such marriages.

Geoff Troughton, Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies at Victoria University, says these fine distinctions matter within the Church.

"It's a balancing act. A same-sex marriage might be conducted legally by the state, and the Church won't conduct that rite. But it might then say you've contracted that legal marriage, and we're prepared to recognise and bless it."

Blessings give marriages religious legitimacy; religious legitimacy confers support and power.

"When [the Church] said they could bless same-sex marriages, it meant these marriages were fit and proper relationships," says emeritus professor Peter Lineham.

"It therefore became possible to ordain gay clergy."

Same-sex blessings will significantly change the Church's treatment of takatapui (LGBTQ+) communities.

The evolution for Anglicanism, and Christianity more generally is important. From being New Zealand's biggest religion, the number of self-identified Anglicans has almost halved since 2006 to just 315,000.

A former lay preacher in the Church says of his departure: "I haven't returned to religion since [I came out]. I've found a position in my own mind about… spirituality, Christianity and faith and works."

Facing similar declines, other Christian denominations are watching the struggles in Anglicanism.

Disputes over same-sex blessings have roiled Anglicanism for years. Senior Anglicans, who gather every decade at London's Lambeth Palace, prohibited "the legitimising or blessing of same sex unions nor ordaining those involved in same gender unions," in 1998.

Liberal Anglicans rebelled. After the American Episcopal Church ordained a bishop in a same-sex relationship in 2003, same-sex blessings became increasingly common in North America.

Schism was not inevitable. Same-sex marriage was hotly debated in Aotearoa in 2016, with the dioceses of Nelson and Christchurch threatening schism in response to the proposals. Compromises and consultation soothed the fractiousness at that time.

It was against this background that ACANZP met in 2018 for General Synod. At this a large majority passed a rule-change to allow bishops to permit the blessing of same-sex marriages.

Few congregations were unanimous in their response to the rule change.

Churches which broke away often left substantial minorities of parishioners; churches which remained, particularly at the schism's epicentre in Christchurch, faced exoduses.

In both cases, Anglican vicar Jay Behan says "people are walking away from buildings where they were married, where they baptised their children, or where they held funerals for loved ones."

According to Archbishop Phillip Richardson of ACANZP, "[Those who left] were all people that I really love. And at a personal level, it hurt like hell."

The flaws in the Coalition's religious discrimination bill are "so serious" it cannot be supported in its current form, the Sydney Anglican diocese has warned.

Bishop Michael Stead has warned the bill would force Anglican youth camps to host Satanist masses at its campsites and has the "perverse effect" of encouraging companies such as Qantas to threaten to withdraw sponsorship to justify restrictions on religious speech in cases like Rugby Australia's sacking of Israel Folau.

In a separate submission, the Freedom for Faith group has claimed the bill fails a commitment by the prime minister, Scott Morrison, "that the law would not take faith groups backwards in terms of protection of religious freedom". Read more
