The New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference (NZCBC) has two new staff members - Kate Aduna and David McLoughlin, looking after administration and communications.

Newly appointed Administrator, Kate, comes to the organisation after several years volunteering with her local Wellington Catholic primary school, having been at home with her daughter. Previously she held a support role with JP Morgan in Manila. She is warmly welcomed for the assistance she will offer the Secretariat.

David takes up the role of NZCBC Communications Adviser, bringing solid experience in all aspects of communications across a range of sectors, including international and national government agencies, media advisory and journalism.

The role of Communications Adviser is a wide one, engaging with the Catholic community and the New Zealand public and media.

Father Felix Donnelly died in Auckland on Monday 26 August.

He was Director of Religious Education for the Auckland Diocese 1962-1971.

For 20 years Donnelly was a talkback host on Radio Pacific.

Donnelly was a controversial commentator on issues in relation to human sexuality.

His views were often seen to be in conflict with the teachings of the Catholic Church but, although his ministry was at times limited, Donnelly remained a priest.

Donnelly studied for the priesthood at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel (1947-1953).

He was ordained a priest for the Auckland Catholic Diocese by Archbishop Liston on 19 July 1953.

As an academic, Donnelly was director of the Department of Community Health and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Science at the University of Auckland, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences from 1972 until his retirement in 1994.

He was the founder and long-term director of the Youthlink Family Trust.

In 1970 Donnelly was instrumental in founding Youthline, a telephone counselling helpline service for youth, run by youth, which still continues.

In 1971 he also established the Youthline Hostel as a home for troubled youth in Auckland.

He was was a prolific writer of non-fiction and wrote one novel.

Felix Donnelly College was named after him.

In the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours, Donnelly was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the welfare of youth.

A service to celebrate Donnelly's life will be held on Saturday 7 September 2019, 11 am at McLaurin Chapel, 12 Princes St, Auckland Central.

TVNZ has quietly ceased production of 30-year-old local series Praise Be, New Zealand's fourth longest-running TV show - and it happened more than a year ago.

The last new episode of the Christian choral show actually screened in late 2015, while the 2016 season - funded to the tune of $388,000 by NZ On Air - consisted of previously aired hymns compiled from Praise Be's back catalogue. Currently screened episodes are repeats. Continue reading

Seventh-day Adventist congregations across New Zealand have gathered to watch the debut of the local affiliate of church-owned Hope Channel on free-to-air television.

Hope Channel New Zealand, as it is known, had been broadcasting via satellite on Freeview Satellite since September 2015.

As of April 30, its broadcast was extended to the free-to-air platform.

"This means every home in New Zealand with a television can now watch the channel for free," said Paul Hopson, coordinator of Hope Channel NZ. Continue reading

False balance reports are those that appear fair because they have two sides, except that one side reflects neither knowledge nor a right to speak.

Reports on Catholicism are especially vulnerable to false balance, and often it is achieved through manipulation of the name "Catholic" and religious symbols such as veils and Roman collars. More media than The New York Times fall prey to it.

Some agenda groups who oppose one or more Catholic teachings, for example, use the name "Catholic," even when there seems little evidence of Catholics in their ranks and no evidence that they represent Catholic teaching. Read more
