A historic convent outside Blenheim has been bought by the Marlborough Tour Company to provide luxury accommodation for the jet-set crowd.

The old St Mary's convent was built in 1901 for the Sisters of Mercy in Blenheim.

It was later moved to its present location in Rapaura, 10 minutes outside Blenheim, where it has been used as a bed and breakfast and wedding venue.

Marlborough Tour Company general manager Scott McKenzie said the property, which would be renamed The Marlborough Lodge, made the company a "one-stop shop" for luxury experiences and accommodation.

Renovations will start in May and the former owner will operate from the site until then.

The Vatican launched a rare review of a German Catholic diocese on Monday following accusations its bishop spent lavishly on a new residence, putting him out of step with the new "church of the poor" promoted by Pope Francis.

The inquiry is officially called a "fraternal visit" to Limburg diocese by Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, the former Vatican nuncio (ambassador) in Berlin, and Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst said in a statement he was looking forward to it.

Limburg diocese, which includes Germany's financial capital Frankfurt, has been in turmoil for months as reports of high cost overruns put pressure on Tebartz-van Elst, 53. Continue reading

A Vatican monsignor arrested on a money-smuggling charge lived in such luxury that police were shocked when they visited his apartment and saw his art treasures.

"We asked ourselves how did this monsignor come to own this place and possess these expensive works of art," an investigator said.

Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, who lived in an affluent section of Salerno, had been director of accounting for the Vatican's Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See.
