Two chaplains are taking up part-time, voluntary roles providing pastoral care and spiritual support to Muslim students - retired political lecturer Dr Najib Lafraie, a former Afghanistan foreign minister who fled the Taliban, and Salmah Kassim, a former diplomatic officer at the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington. Teachers at New Zealand's biggest Islamic school are monitoring students' online activity in light of increasing international concerns over how extremist groups are using the internet to recruit members.

Principal of Mangere's Al-Madinah School, Asin Ali, told the Herald on Sunday that cyber-monitoring of his 550 students was being conducted, including scanning for extremist-related material. The students and their parents know of the surveillance.

Ali said no content had caused concern but vigilance remained important to help ensure young, Islamic New Zealanders were protected from dangerous activity. Continue reading

To avoid the threat of closure, six Catholic schools in Indonesia have agreed to teach Islam to their Muslim students.

A local ordinance in Blitar city, East Java, requires all Muslim students, wherever they might be educated, to be able to read and write verses from the Koran.

A representative of the Islamic Anti-Discrimination Network asked: "Will Islamic schools, which are more exclusive than Catholic schools when it comes to accepting students of different faiths, also be required to provide Buddhist, Christian or Hindu lessons for their non-Muslim students?"

A Catholic college in the southern Philippines is refusing to allow its female Muslim students to wear a hijab veil.

The school, run by the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary, said: "Our origin is Roman Catholic and we cannot deviate from that origin. It is true we cater to students of different religions, but before they are officially enrolled, during interviews of student applicant, rules and regulations are explained to them particularly the non-wearing of the hijab or veil."

A Catholic primary school in London, that was built in the 1930s to cater to large numbers of Irish families moving to the area, now boasts 90 per cent Muslim students.

All pupils at the Rosary Catholic Primary, irrespective of their religion, attend Catholic assemblies in the morning and Mass at the nearby church, while crucifixes and statues of the Virgin Mary line the corridors.

But only around 40 pupils out of 400 are Catholics — the rest are mostly Muslims of Pakistani origin.
