The Rector of St Patrick's College Silverstream, Gerard Tully, has spoken out over the furore surrounding former student and aspiring rugby player Losi Filipo.

Tully made it clear that the school "absolutely opposes violence" and hoped "all who have been affected by the violent incident of October last year - particularly the victims and their families - will recover from their trauma and be able to confidently enjoy life again."

However Tully said, "We do not wash our hands of him, but stand beside him as he seeks to address the harm done and rebuild his life on his journey to become a 'compassionate, just and successful citizen' of New Zealand."

"As a Catholic and Marist school, and in this Year of Mercy, we remain passionately committed to the Gospels and values/virtues/gifts that flow from them, such as honesty, forgiveness, hope and redemption." Continue reading

"It's fitting that a school that has been teaching Samoan students for more than 60-years will be hosting one of Wellington's key Samoan Language Week events," said Dame Susan Devoy, New Zealand's Race Relations Commissioner.

She was speaking at St Patrick's College Silverstream at Samoan Language Week launch event.

A photograph unearthed ahead of the occasion "is itself a measina or treasure," she said.

The 1955 photograph of boarders and Samoan parliamentarians was re-enacted by current Silverstream students.

"Samoan boys have been boarding at Silverstream since the first scholarships were launched soon after World War II," said Dame Susan.

Year Twelve student Ivan Fepulea'i (front right) is a third generation Silverstream student. "Coming here is an opportunity and a privilege. Culture and language is also important to my family."

One of the boys from 1955 is a nephew of the chief gunned down on Black Saturday, and now he's Samoa's Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese.

Henry Walsh, St Pat's Silverstream's cricket star saved his best for last when he signed off his school career in spectacular fashion last week.

Walsh, a powerful right-hand batsman, was playing his last game for St Pat's Silverstream when he scored 225 - out of a total of 369 - from 245 balls in the traditional fixture against St Bede's College in Christchurch.

Walsh's mammoth effort, which included seven sixes and 24 fours, took Silverstream from a precarious position to one of dominance.

It included a 186-run eighth-wicket partnership with Gareth Hitchman, with Hitchman's contribution 36.
