The current English translation has been in use since 1973. "The translation we know well is changing to reflect the latest Latin edition which was published in 2002. The changes are words. There will be new words." says Archbishop Petero Mataca

"These new words are a closer translation of the Latin text, Also quotations and references to Biblical texts will be restored."

"We will hear and say new words but the way the Mass is celebrated remains the same."

" There are rules that cover the Bible readings during Mass (liturgy). The first two readings may be read by lay Reader (readers). But the gospel text is to be read only by a deacon or priest," Archbishop Mataca said.

"We are to participate in the new Mass humbly, fully and meaningfully. "If we participate in this spirit, we will grow in our respect for what is sacred, respect for God, respect for human beings, respect for life, especially human life, etc. We will grow in our relationship with God and with one another."

"The new Missal with the changes is historical in the life of the Church. It is a great moment for all Christ's faithful who are in the world struggling to have a spirituality that is relevant to their lives."

Our Sunday Visitor reports that 77%, which is equivalent to more than 44 million adult American Catholics, remain unaware of the changes.

Perhaps more alarming is that 40% of those who attend Mass on a weekly basis have not heard that the words of the Mass will be under-going a significant change.

Some of the biggest differences in awareness are by generation. Younger Catholics will seem to be more surprised by the changes in Advent; the millennial Catholics in particular, whereas those born before 1943 are the 'most aware' generation.

Those who are more aware of the liturgical changes include those

• who attend Mass on a weekly basis
• enrolled in a parish
• at a catholic school
• more educated Catholics, that is those with a bachelors degree
• mid-west as opposed to north east or southern Catholics

The study was conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University.

The US bishops have asked pastors to undertake an educational effort in the fall, preparing parishioners for the new translation.

The ICET text of the Our Father (what people refer to as the "new" Our Father) was not among the texts given recognition for the Missal. This means that all English-speaking countries will now use the same text of the Our Father. The ICET text will still be able to be used in private prayer and devotions outside of Mass, e.g. in the Rosary. Archbishop Dew said, "We have made strong appeals to Rome for the permission to use the text we have become used to, and we will continue to plead for it."

" This will be disappointing to many. However I think we must acknowledge that the people's parts have already been accepted and people are praying them well, although there are still a few words and phrases which are uncomfortable and are taking some getting used to," he said
