Christian groups in Vanuatu would not support an international reconciliation ceremony which involved Muslims.

The reconciliation took place on Sunday.

The chairman of the Vanuatu Christian Council, Pastor Allan Nafuki, said they would not support the ceremony and instead plan a march for all Christians in Vanuatu next Friday.

The want to send out a message that Vanuatu is a Christian country.

Earlier this year Nafuki said Vanuatu must amend its law on ‘Religious Rights' by inserting the word ‘Christian Country' into its Constitution.

He said leaders might reason that Vanuatu is a democratic country but on the contrary they should consider countries like Greece where only a certain number of religious faiths are allowed into their country.

About 83% Vanuatu's population is Christian.

The 2009 census di not seek data about the Muslim community. However it is reported that there are about 200 Muslim converts. Other sources put it as high as 1000.

The Moslem population is centred on the village of Melle, near Port Villa.

The first mosque in Vanuatu was built there in 1992.

It is just a small building painted white, green, like a very simple house.

The Chairman of the Vanuatu Christian Council, Reverend James Ligo, says the government has lost sight of the nation's original vision for independence by attracting more foreign investors and approving dual citizenship.

He says it is "important to recall our vision for independence because I believe the foundation of Vanuatu as an independent nation was to be different - different in terms of our moral values, our governance, our social and economic relations, social and economic justice."

"We are moving more into opening up for foreign investment, more and more foreign investment into the country, which, in one way, is good for the country because our economy depends on that also."

"But the power to control foreign investment and the degradation of our natural resources is something that we are worried about. Because we believe that god has given that for us to have and to benefit from in a sustainable way.'

Based on the present budget, 10 percent would amount to 21 million US dollars.

Kalosil became Vanuatu's and the region's first Greens prime minister when he came to power last month after former Prime Minister Sato Kilman resigned just ahead of a no confidence motion.

Kalosil is known for his radical green policies. Soon after, he released a list of 100 achievements for himself and his new government.

They include changing the constitution, major changes to ministries, review of foreign affairs, including the termination of some diplomatic appointments, and ending a defence cooperation agreement with Indonesia.

Born to a Tahitian mother and French-born father from Carcassonne in Southern France, Kalosil is the first non ni-Vanuatu to become Prime Minister.

He entered politics in Vanuatu in 2003 when he became foreign affairs minister under then Prime Minister Edward Natapei, now deputy prime minister and minister for foreign affairs.
