Pope Benedict calls space station

Vatican Radio reports that discussions are under way to try to arrange for Pope Benedict to speak to two Italian astronauts onboard the space station.

The planned link-up would happen on May 4 and will coincide with the final mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavour, which is scheduled to leave from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral on 29 April.

Two Italian astronauts will be meeting up on the space station. Roberto Vittori will be aboard the shuttle and Paolo Nespoli is a space station resident. Vittori will be carrying a silver medal donated by the pope.

It is the first time a Pope has placed a call into space.
