Pope Francis says war in Syria leads to more war

Pope Francis rejected war and exhorted all sides to put an end to hostilities and seek peace in Syria.

“No more wars. The use of violence never leads to peace. War calls for war, violence calls for violence,” the pope said over the weekend as the United States and its allies prepared to attack Damascus.

“Humankind needs to see gestures of peace,” said Pope Francis who has rejected before any military action against Syria.

The pope called for the world to unite in a day of fasting and prayer for Syria.

“May the cry for peace enter the hearts of everyone so that they may all lay down their weapons,” the pope told thousands of pilgrims at the Vatican.

The pope announced that the prayers would be led by a five-hour vigil in St Peter’s Square, telling the international community it should make “every effort” for peace.
