Teens break in and help themselves to altar wine

A gang of teens have been arrested after breaking into a Hamilton church and stealing the wine.

They smashed a window and climbed into St Matthew’s Catholic Church in Silverdale Rd, Hillcrest, before making off with the church’s wine supply.

Acting Senior Sergeant Dale Smith said police received a call from residents saying something was amiss.

“Responding units, including a police dog and handler, arrived and began tracking, following a trail of discarded wine bottles.”

They followed a trail of wine bottles through a city suburb to catch the cohort, all aged between 15 and 18.

The police dog led police to a Yorkshire Pl residence, where officers found one of the thieves and a quantity of wine, he said.

“Three others were tracked down in the vicinity and two suffered minor injuries from dog bites.

“The last offender was found at one of our cordons.”
