A million Syrian children have signed a petition to the United Nations and the European Union.
Three Syrian Church leaders are visiting EU and UN officials in Brussels and Geneva on the children’s behalf this week.
Acting as “Ambassadors of the Children,” they will deliver the petition.
In it, the children ask for peace in Syria. They have also made countless drawings expressing their longing for peace.
In Brussels, the leaders will present the petition and drawings to Jean Claude Juncker and Martin Schulz.
Juncker is the European Commission President and Schulz is the European Parliament President.
In Geneva, they church leaders will present the children’s messages to Dr. Filippo Grandi and Prince Al-Huzain.
Grandi is the High Commissioner for Refugees and the Prince is the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The church leaders’ mission is a result of a February 2016 joint declaration.
In it Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill asked Catholic and Orthodox Christians to speak out in unison.
It said they should call for peace in Syria and for support of persecuted Christians.
Father Andrzej Halemba, head of the Middle East section of international Catholic charity Aid to the Church In Need sponsored the mission and gathering children’s signatures.
“The more we Christians are united in our defense of peace and in our support, in particular of children in need, the stronger our voice and the more effective our efforts,” he said.Source
