John Lennox, who calls himself a Christian apologist, recently made a public speaking tour through New Zealand. In a number of his lectures he addressed the question many have been asking themselves, “Where was God at 9 minutes to 1?”
Lennox was appalled at some of the answers people come up with. “I have no simplistic answers and I won’t insult anyone’s pain by offering them.” He thinks that Jesus on the cross demonstrates that whatever else, God does not remain indifferent to human suffering. There is no possibility of an explanation but there is hope. He says there is enough evidence to trust God…there is going to be a day when something is done about it; death is not the end. It did not end at the cross… “I am the Resurrection and the life.” There will be justice.
There is no transcript available of his lectures but audio files are available online.
John Lennox is Professor of Mathematics in the University of Oxford, Fellow in Mathematics and the Philosophy of Science; and Pastoral Advisor at Green Templeton College, Oxford. He is also an adjunct Lecturer at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford University and at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics; and is a Senior Fellow of the Trinity Forum. In addition, he teaches for the Oxford Strategic Leadership Programme at the Executive Education Centre, Said Business School, Oxford University.
After conducting an interview with him Diana Wichtel came to the conclusion that “What you get is a Christian pot calling an atheist kettle black and, endlessly, vice versa”
