There are around 20,000 refugees from Syria in Lebanon, which according to Caritas Lebanon is making Lebanon a “human emergency”.
The refugees are exhausted and desperate. More expected to follow.
Fr Simon Faddoul, President of Caritas Lebanon tells Fides: “The official figures of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees speak of 8-9000 displaced Syrians, officially registered. But only a fraction of refugees register, because refugees are terrified, they fear for their lives and the lives of their families who are still in Syria”.
Faddoul says the last couple of months has seen the situation escalate, each day there are new refugees.
He say that at the moment we can contain it, but if the exodus continues, the situation could soon become unsustainable.
