Not every small parish is lucky enough to have a cardinal as parish priest, but Cardinal Tom Williams is more than happy to come out of retirement to serve the Kaikoura community while Father Eric Urlich is on leave.
Cardinal Williams is no stranger to Kaikoura, having worked there as a relieving priest previously.
He also knows Father Eric very well, having ordained him as priest himself.
“When he invited me to take his place I was delighted,” he said. “I have supplied here before, for a month, for the previous priest, and I have also been here to consecrate the church and bless the school, things like that, so I do feel quite at home here.”
