Archbishop of Canterbury participates in NZ Anglican Council

The Archbishop of Canterbury is taking part in the largest Anglican gathering ever held in New Zealand.

Dr Rowan Williams is meeting with Anglican Church leaders in Auckland during the 15th Anglican Consultative Council. It is the final international engagement for the Archbishop of Canterbury before he steps down from his role in December, and will today start a week-long discussion about how the church will respond to issues like environmental change and domestic violence.

Earlier this week, he unveiled the headstone of former Governor-General Sir Paul Reeves at Auckland’s St John’s College. “It’s a real privilege to be able to take part in this memorial event for Sir Paul Reeves,” Dr Williams said.

“I got to know Paul about 20 years ago, I suppose, and he’d already by then played a huge role in the church internationally and in the life of this nation.”

The Anglican Consultative Council will today start a week-long discussion about how the church will respond to issues like environmental change and domestic violence. Given the present disagreement over so many important issues in the Anglican Church, this meeting is very important.
