Rugby great’s tattoos have turned his body into an expresion of his Faith

When it comes to religious tattoos, the New Zealand-born Samoan Wallaby rugby star Digby Ioane got it pretty much covered.

Ioane, a Catholic, has turned his body into a work of art by decorating it with religious symbols alongside emblems of his homeland, Australia, and his family, plus a couple of exotic asides.

The result is rugby’s answer to David Beckham – a living canvas in needle and ink. It started years ago with a pre-season tattoo and turned into something of a tradition, some might say obsession.

Among the most ornate of the dozen or so main tattoos is a detailed depiction of Jesus carrying the Cross. An extract from Psalm 18 can be read to one side of his impressive six-pack.

Nearby is an image of St Michael the Archangel, said to have led God’s army against the forces of Satan.
