Shine Kaikohe will unveil stage one of Northland’s first public, life-sized, interactive nativity scene on Saturday.
The manger will be a contemporary maihi design with a fusion of traditional and contemporary Maori themes. There will be a few surprises in the depiction of the Christmas story.
The designers of the display are utilizing the park benches and other features of the main street park so that the community can be part of the scene and connect with it.
The display will begin by showing figures representing the infant Jesus, his mother Mary, and Joseph. Other characters from the nativity story such as shepherds, the Magi, and angels will be displayed as the weeks progress through the Shine Kaikohe Festival.
Artists Kelvin Welsh and Toi Maihi have given artistic guidance to the volunteers and local builders Taina Savage and Brian Vesey have overseen the construction..
With over 1,000 people expected at the Kaikohe Christmas Parade on December 8th there will be plenty of things to see and do in Kaikohe with Santa’s Grotto next door to the nativity, the largest Christmas tree in Northland, stalls and fun activities.
