Pope Benedict received a prolonged standing ovation (video) in his first appearance since announcing his resignation.
The pope was in St Peter’s Square to deliver his Ash Wednesday message.
Before delivering his message he took time to thank the faithful for their kindness and saying that during these last few days he could almost feel the love.
“I have felt, almost physically, your prayers in these days which have not been easy for me, the strength which the love of the Church and your prayers brings to me.”
Benedict told the crowd that he made the decision having examined his conscience, “in full freedom” and “for the good of the Church.
Before continuing with his Ash Wednesday message, Benedict then asked the crowd to continue to pray for him and his successor.
Later today Benedict will celebrate his last public papal Mass.
