Illicit Chinese bishops appointed to governing bodies

Four Chinese Catholic bishops — two of them formally excommunicated — have been appointed to the National People’s Congress, China’s parliament, or the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

These are the two most important political structures in the People’s Republic of China.

The bishop named a member of the People’s Congress is Bishop Huang Binzhang of Shantou, who was ordained without authorisation from the Holy See in 2011 and subsequently excommunicated.
