The medical aid charity Medecins Sans Frontieres says it’s dealt with more than 13 thousand cases of family and sexual violence since arriving in Papua New Guinea in 2007.
But it says the issue isn’t just a social problem. For many victims, it’s a medical emergency.
In the last month alone, the group has treated dozens of abuse victims at its new Nine Mile Clinic in Port Moresby.
Paul Brockman, Medicins Sans Frontiers Head of Mission in Papua New Guinea, works in a busy urban clinic. He says it is getting a reputation as a place that people can go to if they’ve experienced intimate partner violence, family violence, or sexual violence.
Brockman was interviewed by Timothy Pope of Radio Australia.
