Samoa remembers tsunami

Memorial services have been held to commemorate the 29 September 2009 tsunami which ripped through villages, homes and businesses, killing 143 people in Samoa, 34 in American Samoa and 9 in Tonga.

Radio New Zealand International reports that memorial church services were held, in the coastal villages of Upolu and people marched in black and white for those whose lives were taken four years ago.

At Leone village, in American Samoa two elementary school students and seven other residents  died in the in the disaster,  100 lanterns were to be in the ocean Sunday to remember those who passed away.

“Each lantern will bear individual prayers and personal moments to be remembered of their beloved family members and friends that were taken in the tsunami tragedy,” said Ipu Avegalio-Lefiti, one of the village organizers.
