Debbie Munroe has a message for people who don’t think poverty exists in New Zealand.
“Come down to Manurewa and join me so you can see what I see.”
The 50-year-old youth worker walks the streets of Manurewa with a small group three nights a week, handing out hot soup and bread to people who need it.
The mother of five started the “soup walk” four months ago, expecting to feed about 10 young people.
Instead she discovered the harsh reality of poverty in her own community.
Munroe feeds at least 50 people a night on average, including children as young as 6 and 7 with “no shoes, no jackets, hungry and cold”. Continue reading
