Church supports Fiji’s first child helpline service

The Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma is supporting Fiji’s first-ever Child Helpline service.

Callers will be able to use a short code toll free phone number which is 1325 to contact the helpline with the cost of the calls being covered through project funding.

“All of us, not only as parents but as church leaders, have that fear coming from all the mediums and also with the kind of activities going on where children are being victimised not through their intentions but by other people, especially adults,” Church social services secretary Reverend Iliesa Naivalu said.

“We will let our members know of this help line — 3125 (sic) — and also we will announce it in the annual conference.”

“The church has now put in place the code of conduct which signifies that all those holding positions in the church, whether ordained or lay, have a part to play in dealing with such issues,” Naivalu said.

“Church leaders play a big role in bringing in such information rather than treating this as something as a taboo.”

“We have also reached a time where everybody has seen things differently because if we do, the number of such cases keep increasing and it’s time that we put a stop and the stop must be put directly by the people who have the power.”
