The Right Reverend George Takeli is the new Archbishop elect of the Anglican Church of Melanesia.
Takeli is currently the bishop of the Diocese of Temotu province.
His appointment as Archbishop was made by the Provincial Electoral Board of the Anglican Church of Melanesia.
The provincial Electoral Board was made up of Bishops, clergy and lay people.
The Board currently comprises eight diocesan bishops, 13 clergy members and 13 lay men.
They had been meeting at Tetete Ni Kolivuti – the recently built conference hall of the Community of the Sisters of the Church at Tenaru area in east Honiara.
Takeli, 56, was raised at Suholo village on Ulawa Island, Makira-Ulawa Province.
He was ordained to the priesthood in 1995 and was a priest in the Anglican Church for 16 years.
Takeli was ordained the Bishop of Temotu province in 2009.
He also holds a Masters Degree in Theology from Auckland University, New Zealand and was undertaking a doctoral degree in Theology program at Charles Stuart University in Australia.
Bishop Takeli will be enthroned on the 17th of April 2016 at the Saint Barnabas Provincial Cathedral in Honiara.
He said that his main priorities as Archbishop of Melanesia will be to establish an active missionary church alongside a strong and effective administration system and a strong investment division for the Anglican Church of Melanesia.
The post of Archbishop of the Anglican church of Melanesia which includes Vanuatu and New Caledonia was left vacant following the official retirement of its outgoing incumbent, the Most Right Reverend David Vunagi in September last year.
