Pax Christi USA is condemning President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.
The Catholic peace movement says it is “short-sighted” and “an insane move.
“This decision is short-sighted and opens the door to war or the resurgence of Iran’s nuclear programme.”
Pax Christi says the Iran Deal has been successful in ensuring that Iran dismantle their nuclear programme and not create new ones.
This was achieved by providing Iran with greater economic opportunities through relief from secondary sanctions.
“Essentially, Iran stopped their nuclear programme because the Iran Deal made it economically expedient to do so,” Pax Christi says.
“There is no clear benefit, economic or otherwise, to the US pulling out.”
Pax Christi says Trump’s decision may be a “political stunt” so he can cement his own legacy at the expense of the achievements made by his predecessor, Barack Obama.
They say this could lead to the “slow but certain disintegration of the diplomatic process with other world leaders” and is another example of “the erosion of sustainable peace.”
Trump’s supporters have countered Pax Christi’s views, saying the president is making good on his campaign pledges and showing himself to be a man of action.
As an example, they say Trump’s decision to relocate the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem recognises Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.
They also point out Trump will be meeting North Korea’s Kim Jong-un in Singapore next month for talks aimed at denuclearising the Korean Peninsula.
This will make him the first sitting US leader to meet a North Korean leader.
