The Vatican-China agreement signed five years ago yielded positive results despite the dialogue between Beijing and Rome not progressing as desired, says a China expert Belgian missionary priest.

Two Chinese bishops attending the upcoming Synod on Synodality beginning in the Vatican next month is obviously a clear fruit of the agreement, said Scheut missionary Father Jeroom Heyndrickx.

Heyndrickx has spent decades in Taiwan and China as a missionary and seminary professor, starting in 1957 and was a member of the Vatican Commission on China between 2007 and 2013 before returning to Belgium.

He made the remarks on the China-Vatican deal in an interview with the Vatican's Fides news agency on the fifth anniversary of the 2018 Sino-Vatican deal on Sept 22.

A Chinese bishop has resigned just weeks before the Vatican and Beijing are expected to renew a controversial agreement on appointments, saying he could not keep pace with changing times.

The Chinese government has been 'very successful in gaining a great deal of sway over the papacy' through a 'secret deal' negotiated between Pope Francis and the Communist party, according to Chaplains Without Borders Founder Father James Grant.

While one in 14 Chinese are reported to be Christian, many are connected with home churches which are not recognised by the Communist government.

Priests and parishioners have barricaded themselves in a Catholic church in the Chinese province of Hebei. According to reports, the Catholics are attempting to prevent the Chinese government from tearing down the Church.

The protest began at 6am Thursday morning at the church in Wu Gao Zhang, part of the Guantao district of Hebei, on the coast of northern China.

Officials have ordered that the church be destroyed even though it is fully recognized and approved by the government. According to the website AsiaNews, local authorities have said the building lacks appropriate permits. Read more
