With most of its eligible adult population covered, Fiji's Covid-19 vaccine rollout for teenagers is gaining pace.

The health ministry says 28,965 children aged 15 to 17 have received a first vaccine dose - and 3,892 teenagers have received a second.

The rollout was recently extended to this age bracket, after vaccination rates covered almost all of Fiji's eligible adult population aged 18 and over - 95.9 percent of them have received their first vaccine dose, and 84.4 percent have had a second.

Daily reports on new cases of Covid-19 in Fiji continues to show numbers are well down on the peak from late July.

The Health Ministry on Thursday reported 25 new Covid cases, taking the total number of cases to date to almost 52,000.

The Caritas Fiji Archdiocese of Suva has assisted 1000 families in COVID-19 containment areas with food rations, according to organisation official Tevita Naikasowalu.

While the nation celebrated Fiji's victory at the Olympic Games, he said frontline and humanitarian workers were putting their lives on the line so people in containment areas were fed.

"I would like to salute all frontline and humanitarian workers who put their lives on the line in the fight against COVID-19," he said.

He said he was blessed to be part of the team distributing assistance.

This, he added, should remind people they needed to be grateful during this difficult time as communities struggled to find food.

The Fiji Times reports that the Methodist Church has warned its leaders that it would take action against those influencing church members not to get vaccinated.

Speaking during a virtual meeting regarding the church's stand on covid-19 on Thursday, the church's general secretary, the Rev Iliesa Naivalu has reminded pastors that they were answerable to the church.

Naivalu has also called on them to refrain from circulating baseless videos being circulated on social media.

Naivalu reminded pastors that they had a duty to preach about goodness and life to those under their charge.

Fiji has reported 241 new cases of covid-19 infections and one death in the 24-hour period ending at 8am yesterday.
