Pihopa Waitohiariki Quayle, New Zealand's first Maori woman bishop, 24th November, was welcomed in a service that took place in the beautiful and historic of Rangiatea Church in Otaki.

The newly ordained bishop was supported by groups from different areas.

She comes from from the Wairarapa, but now has charge of a large area that includes Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and Wellington up to Palmerston.

Rev Dr Rangi Nicholson, the local minister, welcomed Waitohiariki. "I hope your ordination will bring new life to Rangiatea and the region", he said.

He noted that all churches welcomed her.

"We are faced with a lot of challenges. How do we, Anglicans and indeed all Christians, keep the church alive, especially for youth".

The service was organized and led by another Rangiatea minster, Rev Marie Collin.

She is an Anglican priest who also hails from the Wairarapa.

She was assisted by long-time Anglican support, Rev Georgia Hapeta.

The service was the one used on Aotearoa Sunday.

It marks the start of the Christian church in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

It recalls Samuel Marsden, whose arrival was to shape the bicultural identity of the church.

Waitohiariki pronounced forgiveness, read the Gospel and preached.

"I acknowledge all those who have gone before me. They opened the gateway to the Gospel for us.

I remember especially the different Maori Bishops before me, such as Bishop Paul Reeves, Bishop Hapai Winiata, Bishop Whakahuihui Vercoe and Bishop Muru Walters".

At her ordination in Masterton in September the bishop was presented with a full kakahu.

Denise Hapeta explained how it had been woven by local weavers.

It is called Tohaina o painga ki te Ao: Spread your good works to the world.

"This kakahu is a blessing for you to do that", she said.

The bishop gave a final Blessing.

After the service, the bishop was welcomed onto Raukawa Marae where further speeches were made and a lovely hakari to celebrate.

Former Catholic priest becomes Anglican bishop... Read more]]> A former Catholic priest has been chosen to serve as interim bishop of Uruguay, the most secular country in South America.

Daniel Genovesi was consecrated in Buenos Aires Cathedral last Saturday.

He and his wife Mercedes, a former nun, will start their new ministry on 1 April.

Difficulties involving personnel, finances and a gradual reduction in clergy numbers have plagued the Uruguay diocese recently.

As the interim bishop, Genovesi will work, with help, to strengthen the diocese.

The diocese was formerly part of the Anglican Diocese of Argentina.

During that time it developed its own distinctive style and sought to grow as a local church.

Differences from the rest of the Province in theology and churchmanship, and frustration about the non-ordination of women led a bid from the Diocese to leave the Anglican Church of South America and join the Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil - the Anglican Church in Brazil.

The move was rejected by the Province of South America.

More recently, the diocese has faced a series of difficulties involving personnel, finances and a gradual reduction in clergy numbers, "bringing into question the ability of the diocese to function independently and elect a new diocesan bishop", the Bishop of Northern Argentina, Nick Drayson, said.

In response to an approach from the Diocesan Council, the Province's House of Bishops proposed the appointment of an interim bishop.

Genovesi, who had served as Priest of San Marcos in Hurlingham, Buenos Aires for nearly 12 years, reacted to the appointment with surprise and joy.

He has expressed "enthusiasm and the desire to go to a new place in order to listen, accompany, encourage, orientate and recreate in the name of Jesus".

Both Genovesi and his wife are professional psychologists. Genovesi is also the author of a number of books.

Reverend Doctor Peter Carrell was ordained the 9th Anglican bishop of Canterbury last Saturday.

The service took place at Christchurch Boys' High School Auditorium.

It was led by Archbishops Philip Richardson and Don Tamihere.

About 1000 people attended including Anglicans from the diocese and the province, members of the Maori Anglican Church, Tikanga Maori, the Pacific Anglican Church, Tikanga Pasifika, heads of other denominations, civic leaders, business leaders and the new Bishop's family and friends.

Carrell's installation was celebrated in a second service in Cathedral Square on Sunday. The bishop said the location of the installation was deliberate.

In an interview prior to his installation, Carrel said he had chosen to hold his installation ceremony in front of the ruined Christ Church Cathedral as a symbol of his commitment to restoration.

"I wanted to make clear that we are really connected to the cathedral and its future in the Square."

On Sunday he reiterated his commitment: "Today I am not able to be installed inside the cathedral but I am glad to be installed as close to it as safety permits.

One day we will be inside the cathedral again and, when we re-open it, I will stand outside the main doors, eager to bang on the doors with my crozier, a custom normally associated with an installation service."

The Gothic-style 138-year-old Anglican cathedral was badly damaged in the 6.3-magnitude February 22, 2011, quake that devastated Christchurch.

Last year, the Government and Anglican Diocese of Christchurch agreed on a funding and joint-venture deal for a $104 million restoration.

Two large cranes began work in December to remove steel framing that has propped up the front of the Cathedral for several years.

At the time Keith Paterson said the aim was for the steel framing to be deconstructed by early February, in time for the installation.

Paterson is the project director for Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Limited (CCRL).

The new Anglican bishop for Canterbury is "completely behind" restoration of the earthquake-damaged Christ Church Cathedral.

On Tuesday, the Venerable Doctor Peter Carrell was announced as the new Bishop-Elect of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch. Carrell, a Cantabrian, is well-known and respected throughout New Zealand for his teaching and preaching.

He is presently the Diocesan Director of Education and Director of Theology House - as well as Archdeacon of Pegasus (Christchurch East). He is a board member at Christ's College.

He has been an Anglican priest since 1987.

The new bishop was nominated by the Canterbury synod in mid-August. The General Synod, which is the national Anglican ruling body, and the House of Bishops then voted on the nomination.

Peter, who is married to Teresa Kundycki-Carrell, has deep roots in Christchurch, and in the Anglican expression of the Christian faith.

Peter, the son of Bishop Brian Carrell and his wife May, grew up in an evangelical Anglican home.

He began serving his curacy in the Parish of Shirley in 1987. He then embarked on postgrad theological studies at the University of Durham, from where he was awarded his doctorate in 1993.

He returned to the Diocese of Nelson where he served as assistant priest in Stoke, Vicar of Blenheim South (from 1995 to 2001) and Ministry Educator from 2001 to 2010.

Peter, Teresa and their family returned to Christchurch just in time for the September 2010 earthquakes.

The bishop-elect said he supported the restoration of the cathedral because it was a "particularly iconic building in the life of Christchurch, Canterbury and New Zealand."

"I felt that the principal monetary objection was dealt with by the government's offer and we should accept it."

"As the owners of that iconic building, there would be a lot of benefits to reinstating the icon. I look forward to us being able to resume worshipping God in this great cathedral in the heart of our city, but also the cathedral will be a drawcard for visitors to the centre of our city."

The ordination of Dr ‘Afa Vaka as the first Anglican bishop of Tonga is the fulfilment of a long-held desire among Anglicans there for a greater level of autonomy within the Diocese of Polynesia.

Vaka, who was consecrated and installed on Sunday, is actually the third Anglican bishop to serve in Tonga.

Its first Anglican missionary was Bishop Alfred Willis who arrived in 1902. In the mid-1960s, Bishop Fine Halapua, the father of Archbishop Winston Halapua, lived in Tonga and served there as a suffragan bishop of the Diocese.

Vaka is Tonga's first constitutionally-mandated bishop. His election follows the decision taken by the Diocesan synod in May to establish the Archdeaconry of Tonga as an episcopal unit.

Last Sunday's service of consecration and installation saw a crowd of around 300 people squeezed in and around St Paul's Church in Nuku'alofa.

During the service, Archbishop Halapua outlined the episcopal history of Tonga. He said that for the past 50 years, this distinct entity in the Pacific, with its own language, culture, traditions and fervent love for the monarchy, had been without its own bishop.

At his election, Vaka said having its own bishop puts the Anglican Church in Tonga "on another level."

That new and more visible position will bring recognition - and mean a great deal to faithful Tongan Anglicans who live in the world's only constitutionally-Methodist monarchy.

"For us," he says, "it's like a flower blooming. Or a bird that has begun to fly."

'Afa Vaka comes from a family with deep Anglican roots - four members of the Vaka family have been ordained priest and two more will be soon.

After graduating from St Andrew's High School (Tonga's Anglican college) as head boy in 1970, he immediately returned to help out as a volunteer woodwork teacher and was there for 32 years until he stepped down as principal.

Along the way, he'd picked up formal qualifications in woodwork and industrial arts - he set up an industrial arts department at the school - and a Bachelor of Education from the University of the South Pacific.

There are three marks carved into the pastoral staff that the new Anglican Bishop of Wellington, Justin Duckworth, has been given by inmates at Rimutaka Prison. They symbolise the core values of Urban Vision, the movement he and his wife helped to found 25 year ago.

  • having a Jesus centre
  • belonging deeply together
  • giving our best for the least

Bishop Duckworth told the cathedral congregation of close to 2000 who attended his ordination that he was thinking about those who couldn't be with them today - that is, the inmates - and he told the congregation of a wero that those inmates, who are in the faith-based unit at Rimutaka, had laid upon him.

Please, never forget us. We need you to stand up for us, and to stay faithful to those of us who need you most.

Bishop Duckworth was ordained in the Cathedral of St Paul in Wellington on Saturday 30 June.

Bishop elect Duckworth was led into his cathedral by about 140 supporters. They included his wife, Jenny Duckworth, and his family and members of the two movements which he and his wife helped to found: Urban Vision, and a contemporary monastery of St Andrew's at Ngatiawa, near Waikanae, where they have been living.

Archbishop David Moxon was the chief presider, supported by Archbishops Brown Turei and Winston Halapua.
