A Catholic priest based in Tasmania, Australia, exemplifies how sport can be a powerful tool for evangelisation in contemporary society.

Fr Leo Zenarosa, Administrator of the Bridgewater-Brighton Parish, dedicates his mornings to prayer and exercise. He often rises at 5am and runs for up to two hours.

During these runs he finds solace in prayer, invoking the intercession of Our Lady, St Paul and St Therese of Lisieux.

For Zenarosa, sport is about personal fitness and connecting with the local community. He sees it as his calling to inspire others, stating "I believe that sport is my calling to inspire people".

"I meet a lot of people while I'm running. I literally run in Bridgewater so that they will know me... They become my friends and I believe it's because of the prayer that I offer as I do my exercise."

Zenarosa recently participated in the challenging Ironman 70.3 Tasmania race - with the Archbishop's blessing. The event comprises swimming, cycling and running segments.

Despite the physical and mental challenges, he persevered, buoyed by his faith. "If I had no faith in God, I would have stopped in the middle of the sea" he confessed. "You've got to put in your mind that ‘I can do this'."

Leading others to Christ

Beyond personal achievement, Zenarosa sees his participation in such events as an opportunity for spiritual offering. He dedicates his efforts to those suffering, particularly in his parish, aiming to inspire hope and resilience.

Zenarosa has even attracted individuals to attend Mass through his training routines and participation in sporting events. "I met lots of friends and some of them are attending my Mass at 12 noon, the young ones especially because they love competition, running."

Zenarosa's love for sport and unwavering faith find resonance in the words of St Paul: "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7).

For Zenarosa, this sentiment encapsulates his life's mission - to persevere in faith and lead others to Christ.

Italian Challenger of Record Luna Rossa has launched its first AC75 in Cagliari, Sardinia.

Last Thursday, TVNZ reported that the boat was blessed by the Catholic Church (sic), before being christened by Miuccia Prada, head designer of the fashion label and the wife of the team's boss.

Should New Zealanders get the impression that all 1.3 billion Catholics are putting their weight behind the Italian team it should be pointed out that it was His Excellency Monsignor Arrigo Miglio, Archbishop of Cagliari, who performed the blessing, not the whole Catholic church.

Maybe Team New Zealand should also invoke divine help from the Bishop of Auckland.

Father Louis Bochkolz has proudly worn his collar while playing the game that he loves for Castlecliff Football Club in Whanganui

The game last Sunday was a farewell celebration for him between Castlecliff St Anthony's XI and a Whanganui combined XI which was attended by almost 100 people.

Buchholz is from Belgium, he was posted to Whanganui by his superiors who have now called him back to resume his work in Western Europe.

Vice president of Castlecliff FC Sean Peterson said that the turnout was a testament to how well-respected Bochkolz was in the community.

Peterson said that Bochkolz had become a close friend of his through playing together at Castlecliff.

"He's a huge loss to the club, he was my right-hand man when it came to motivating everyone. His level of commitment and dedication was infectious.

He has been the guy that has lifted everyone's spirits when it comes to games and when it comes to training."

Bochkolz is a member of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), an international organisation of traditionalist Catholic priests founded in 1970 by the French archbishop, Marcel Lefebvre.

In 1988, Pope John Paul II excommunicated Archbishop Lefebvre for ordaining four "bishops" without permission from the Holy See, as required by canon law.

The excommunications of the surviving bishops were lifted in 2009 by Benedict XVI

In remitting the excommunications, Benedict noted that "doctrinal questions obviously remain and until they are clarified the Society has no canonical status in the Church and its ministers cannot legitimately exercise any ministry."

SSPX appears to have abandoned efforts to reunite with Rome, releasing a statement in June 2016 that claims Pope Francis is encouraging the spreading of errors in church teaching.

In July SSPX elected Fr. Davide Pagliarani as their new superior general.

Jean-Marie Guénois, the religion correspondent at French newspaper Le Figaro, said the previous superior, Bishop Fellay had been "ousted" in favour of a candidate who opposes further rapprochement with the Vatican.

The Archbishop of Lima, Juan Luis Cipriani, is backing Peru to beat the All Whites in their second contest in Lima on Wednesday.

In his programme 'Dialogue of Faith', broadcast on a cable TV channel, Cipriani said he does not think much of the All Whites.

"Honestly, the other team is bad, you have to say it clearly, they are big men and big guys, but nothing more."

Cipriani was disappointed with Peru's performance in Wellington. He said they "were without electricity and they lacked resolution"

"It has shocked me a lot and I ask [God] to enlighten [Ricardo] Gareca, who is in charge of the national team..." said Cipriani.

He said he was not sure if the forwards would be able to find a safe place on their return to Lima because they played so badly.

The Cardinal told the cable TV channel "I think that Peru can play much better and will play much better. We have the game in our country, I estimate that here there will be a good result."

Many in the media harshly criticised Peru's coach, Ricardo Gareca, for not making any changes when the first leg of the World Cup playoff in Wellington on Saturday was not going well.

Others pointed the finger at the likes of Andre Carrillo and Edison Flores for their lack of flair in attack.

Perhaps the most vociferous critic was Phillip Butters, who said on his radio show that a lack of leadership was behind Peru's poor showing.

Peru was without its captain and striker Paolo Guerrero due to a failed doping test, with Jefferson Farfan starting up front.
