Priest and 1500 parishioners on attempted murder charge

A Goa parish priest and more than 1,500 parishioners have been charged with attempted murder after six policemen were attacked and injured on Saturday night.

Enraged parishioners attacked the policemen after they turned up at around 9pm at St Francis Xavier Church in Velim to talk to Father Romano Gonsalves.

The crowd thought the policemen had come to try and intimidate the parish priest who was raided recently by income-tax and police officials.

Fr Gonsalves tried to shield the policemen in his bedroom but the parishioners dragged them out and beat them up.

Fire kills eunuchs at meeting

The Church expressed shock and sympathy today after a fire ripped through a community park in Delhi yesterday killing 13 eunuchs and leaving 35 others injured.

The blaze broke out yesterday evening in a pandal (tented enclosure) in the park in East Delhi’s Nand Nagri district where over 1,000 eunuchs from across the country had assembled for a three-day gathering.

“We are deeply grieved to hear about the incident and extend our sympathies to the families of those killed and injured,” said Father Dominic Emmanuel, spokesman of Delhi archdiocese.

Thousands attend murdered nun’s funeral

Thousands bid a tearful farewell to Sister Valsa John, the murdered nun who was laid to rest at St Paul’s Cathedral in Jharkhand’s Pakur district yesterday while details emerged as to how she actually died.

On Tuesday night, the nun was sleeping in the house of a villager called Sonaram Hembrom when around 30-40 people armed with crude weapons laid siege to the house.

“The poor have lost a benefactor. The religious sister was serving the poor, especially tribals, and fighting for justice,” said Cardinal Telesphore Toppo of Ranchi.
