Sleeping priest, 80, severely beaten, and robber asks for prayers

They broke into the priest’s home as he slept, busted his ribs and gave him a black eye.

The Rev. Daniel Mallette, preparing for the next life, confessed his sins aloud. The two masked intruders told the 80-year-old priest to shut up and beat him some more.

Ireland priest cleared of indecent assault

Fr Dan Duane, of Cecilstown in Mallow, Co Cork, had told the jury at Cork Circuit Criminal Court that he had no recollection of the meeting where the woman alleged he had assaulted her.

The alleged victim had claimed that this meeting had changed the course of her life. She claimed Fr Duane had indecently assaulted her while whispering to her that it was “OK with God” and “God would approve.”

Fr Duane denied the assault and said he had no recollection of the meeting the woman complained of.

He told the court she must have invented the story.

The jury delivered its not guilty verdict after an hour and 25 minutes of deliberations.

Priest fined for roadside death

Emotions were raw and tears flowed in the Invercargill District Court yesterday as the family of a man killed by an 80-year-old priest who fell asleep at the wheel spoke of the devastating impact of losing a husband, father and grandfather.

Fr Vincent Kenneth Smith and another priest had been returning from officiating at a funeral in Nightcaps on June 28 when he fell asleep as they were driving south, through the Makarewa urban area.
