Catholic vote trending Republican

In a shift that could have consequences for the 2012 election, Catholic voters – especially non-Hispanic white Catholics – are more likely to identify as Republican or leaning Republican than they were in 2008.

A 2008 survey by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life found a significant Democratic advantage among Catholics. Fifty-three percent identified as Democratic or leaning Democratic voters, compared to 37 percent identifying with the Republican camp.

Obama: FDA Considers Putting Morning-After Pill on Supermarket Shelves

The federal government is grappling with the explosive question of whether to let anyone of any age buy the controversial morning-after pill Plan B directly off drugstore and supermarket shelves without a prescription.

The Food and Drug Administration has until Wednesday to respond to a request from the drug’s manufacturer to make the pill as easy to get as toilet paper and toothpaste, a move pushed by some doctors, health advocates, family-planning activists, members of Congress and others to help women prevent unwanted pregnancies.

US Baptist church bans interracial couples

Members at Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church, in Kentucky, have voted to prevent interracial couples from becoming members or taking part in any services other than funerals.

The ban has opened a war of words between worshippers in the Pike County community and provoked accusations of discrimination.

It was imposed after Stella Harville, the church secretary’s daughter, attended a service with her black fiance Ticha Chikuni.

US Catholic church formalises Anglican conversions

Anglicans in the United States who want to become Roman Catholic will have a formal structure to oversee the conversion starting New Year’s Day.

Catholic Cardinal Donald Wuerl announced Tuesday the equivalent of a diocese for converts who want to retain some of their Anglican heritage.

The new body will be called the Anglican Ordinariate for the United States. It follows an unprecedented invitation from Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 for Anglicans to join the Catholic Church in groups or as parishes. Formerly, converts were accepted on a case-by-case basis.
