New Zealand has been given a huge wake-up call with the OECD highlighting it as the world leader in growth and income inequality, a policy analyst claims.
The gap between New Zealand’s rich and poor has widened more than in any other developed country during the past 20 years, according to an OECD report.
Figures from the “Divided We Stand” think-tank show the income of the richest 10% of Kiwis is now more than 10 times that of the poorest 10%.
Paul Barber, from the NZ Council of Christian Social Services, told TV ONE’s Breakfast this has come as no surprise, and urgent steps must be taken.
He said the gap has been growing for two decades, but what is a surprise is that the whole OECD is now calling for steps to be taken to lessen the gap, saying it is counterproductive.
